Weekend of Culture!

So, we've been hanging out in Cleveland and people say...what's to do there?!
Well, here's what we did over the weekend:

Friday, 8pm. "Chicago" the musical! Yes, broadway show in downtown Cleveland. Anyway, so we heard from our friend Island Girl about the show, and we thought, hey, that's great! We've heard a lot about it, but have never had the chance to go to it. Anyway, the musical was being performed in Playhouse Square. It's a historical building only a few blocks from the heart of Cleveland. I'm not sure how old it is, but I think I remember seeing a "MCMXXX". If any of you know Latin, you can decipher that. Anyway, the entrance of the theater leads into a grand foyer the size of a small high school gym, with lots of wall murals, plush carpeting, and grand chandeliers. The insides have that musty smell you get in really old buildings. The were actually several theaters all attached in the same building; the one we were in was the "State Theater". We sat on the mezzanine level, about a third of the way back. We still have a pretty good view of the whole stage, but it did seem a bit far away. Wish we had one of those binoculars, so we could check out the performers up close.
Anyway, the show was very good. The music, the performance, everything was very entertaining. What was annoying though were some of the darn Midwesterners and their lack of class. Almost toward the end of first half, maybe 5-10 minutes prior to the intermission, some of the audience began to walk out. I mean, people are still trying to enjoy the show, and like entire families are filing down the stairs out into the lobby. We were like, WTF! Anyway, we see the same people come back minutes later, holding buckets of soft drinks, snacks and crap. Of course, imagine these same people, probably with BMI's way up in the 30's--yeah, FATTIES! Jeez, no wonder people here are fat! In CA, you wouldn't see people running out of the theater clamoring after snacks and crap! Hello, this is a theater! Not a freakin' football or baseball game! Get a clue!
And MM wanted me to wear a suit to this thing?!
Well, at least the performance was good... yeah, you over there, don't trip over your friggin' pile of candy wrappers!

Part two of our cultural weekend was: Def Leppard and Bryan Adams concert!!
Yes, big stars actually do come to Cleveland, remember our Sting sighting?! Okay, granted, I guess Def Leppard and Bryan Adams aren't as big as they used to be, but hey, at least we get to see some "stars" out in midwestern land.
Well, Saturday night, 6:30 pm, the event was at Eastlake Park. It's the home of the "Eastlake Captains", I guess they're some minor league team out in the suburbs east of Cleveland. It's actually only about half an hour from where we live, a small but a decent ball park. Anyway, we sat a little off the 1st base line, up in the grandstand. The stage was set up deep in the center field, so, it was kinda far away. We still got a pretty good view, but we just can't see the performers up close. Anyway, some no name duet played acoustic guitars and opened the gig, at least the singer sounded decent, but the sound was just like any other alternative acoustic guitar singer. Next comes Bryan Adams. In black t-shirt, black jeans, and in sunglasses. He started around 7:00, but it was still pretty bright out, so there wasn't any specially lighting effects. He played all the old tunes: Summer of '69, Cuts Like a Knife, that tune from Robin Hood...etc. He sounded good...but MM and I both felt it was kind of a boring performance. Good to hear him live though... Anyway, He played about an hour and a half, there was a 20-30 min break, and about 9pm, Def Leppard started. By this time, the sky was dark, the field lights turned off, and we were treated to a show of Veri-Lights and Multimedia back-splash and the band itself. Probably the atmosphere helped, and we heard our favorites: Hysteria, Rock of Ages, Foolin', you name it! We stayed till about 95% of the way through, when they started their encore tunes. We wanted to get out of there quick though, cuz there were plenty of drunken hicks out there. Oh, yeah, that's another blog entry in itself--crowd watching. I'll let MM blog about that, heh!
I think I've done quite a bit of blogging this time.....
We'll post some pics!
